Sleepy Blue-Tit...........Slaperig Pimpelmeesje.........

Yesterday in the afternoon I saw this on the ground by the back-door, a fluffy little ball, sitting very still......

When I went to it and touched it, a little head came out of the feathers...it was a sleeping blue-tit! I thought he might perhaps want some water, and yes, he did, but afterwards he went straight back to sleep. My beloved took a video of it........you can see it below:

When it was a bit later, he was still asleep, so I put him in a box in the shed with some food and water. This morning I went to look, and the little bird had flown away! Probably through one of the small holes in the roof. It was sweet though, I had never seen a blue-tit asleep.....
And in the meantime the centre of the Welsh quilt is done, so I can start on the borders.

Have a nice day!

Fijne dag!

Three houses..............Drie huisjes..............

In between doing the applique, I put together, by hand, the first three houses of the Home Sweet Home quilt. (From the book by Barb Adams and Alma Allen). It is beginning to look like something!

The Album on the Mary Simon block looks more like a book now.... I did get a few questions about the overlay and some other things. I'll talk about that next time.

The sweet little cream jug in the photo has a story behind it. When I still lived in the Lake District, before I got married and moved away from there, I often visited my friends, Mr and Mrs Bright. They had an enormous house with at least 10 bedrooms, and large grounds. Every time I went there Mrs Bright gave me a little bouquet of flowers fresh from the garden. She called it a 'Tussie-Mussie'. On one occasion she also gave me this sweet old cream jug.
I still often pick small flowers from the garden, and so the 'tussie-mussie' tradition is carried on.

The weather has been beautiful, and then the garden is calling quite loud! While I was weeding I suddenly saw this little March violet, ....like a sweet spring surprise....

Have a nice day!

Fijne dag allemaal!

Civil War Bride and a day out......Civil War Bride en een dagje uit....

In between everything else, I have prepared the third block of the Civil War Bride quilt. You can see a picture of it here. The pattern by Corliss Searcey is based on an old quilt (of course....). I ordered the pattern from Australia, en so far I have only done 2 blocks.... The photo of this block does not look very good, as everything is basted, but without the flower stems. But that will change when I start the applique.

Yesterday, today and tomorrow not much is happening, as our son and daughter-in-law are visiting us. The weather is glorious, so we went to the beach today for a picnic...

A nice small village, Llansteffan, close to the sea, at the end of the Towy estuary. The river that comes by us ends in the sea there.

It is only 15 minutes drive from us, nice and close...

Running over the beach.....

Heerlijk over het strand gerend....

And then up the mountain, because there is an old Welsh castle.....

You are allowed to look around the ruins of the castle, and it is free...! There are lovely views..

There are openings in the walls all around, and it is as if the walls have faces that have looked out on this ancient landscape for hundreds of years...

And then suddenly there is a well. I can imagine them carting water up all those stairs.....Our taps are a lot easier. But I can remember that my grandfather's farm in Holland had a well, and my uncles used to draw water with a bucket...

Enjoy your day!

Fijne dag!

Mary Simon layers........Mary Simon laagjes....

Making a Baltimore block, especially one of the Mary Simon blocks, demands patience. There are quite a few layers as so many pieces overlap each other. So they have to be built up carefully, otherwise you have to do some reverse stitching...
The first layer of the 5th block is down. 49 pieces, but in total there are 126, so I can keep going for a while. All those pieces look a bit lonely, but not for long.....

The whole block goes back under the overlay, and more pieces are pinned on. All the pieces are in different bags, according to colour.

I love building these blocks. You can see the picture grow and with every layer it becomes more beautiful. It already looks better now......

Just a close-up....

Hier nog even een close-up....
And in the meantime I have received a beautiful book  'The Art of Elegant Hand Embroidery' by Janice Vaine. It is a lovely hardback, has a CD with patterns enclosed, and has not been published long.

I also want to show you our neighbours on the other side of the road. It is dusk, and the moon has come up already....

As you can see, we have nice neighbours....... They look at me as if I am from another planet...perhaps they are right...
Have a nice day!

Fijne dag!

A house. a star, and Mary Simon...........Een huisje, een sterretje en Mary Simon...

Septimus is very happy. His house is finished, complete with stars, a garden, and 24 berries. I made a few more light berries, and used the same cards so that I could get 24, specially for him.... (click on the photo if you want a bigger picture)

Septimus is helemaal gelukkig.
The Welsh Brecon Star quilt has grown a little too.....

Because I always want some applique to do, I prepared the first layer of the next Mary Simon block - the Album. For in my easy chair by the woodburner, with my daylight lamp....
First I pinned all the first layer pieces under the overlay with the pattern on it....

Then the overlay is taken off, so that I can start basting...

And when that is finished I can start sewing at last..... that sounds as if I don't like the prep work. Actually I love all of it. Every new block is like a journey of discovery. First I have to try and find the right fabrics, which is a wonderful excuse for looking through my fabrics. Then drawing all the tempates on freezer-paper, which helps me to get to know the pattern...
Those have to be cut out, which I love doing, just like in the infant school. Then they have to be ironed onto the fabric. I draw around them with my white Clover pen, cut them out, and then at last I can start....

Oh, I thought you might like to see a close-up of one of our neighbours, who loved posing...

O, en hier nog even een close up van een van onze buren die best graag wilde poseren....

Nice and cuddly, don't you think?
Enjoy your day!

Lekker knuffeltje he?
Fijne dag!

Berries.................Besjes.....

The last few days I have had a bad attack of sinusitis. But with rest (= sitting in an my favourite chair and sewing) and medicines, it is already beginning to get better.
And ..... the Berry Street block from the Home Sweet Home quilt is nearly finished.....

The garden has to be attached, but the bushes are already standing around the house. Septimus is quite content, but has just reminded me, that there should be berries on the bushes, so that he can eat them.
He is very fussy....! And not just a few berries, but 24..!!
So I am making berries now. How? I draw round the template on thin cardboard, 24 times. Well, actually, I could only get 23 on the card, so don't tell Septimus....
Then I draw round the template on the wrong side of the fabric, and cut it out, adding a seam allowance. With a knotted thread I make running stitches all around the berry in the seam allowance - put the card inside, and pull tight. (Click on the photo to see it all bigger.)

A hot iron on it, then carefully loosen the thread and take the card out, pull the thread again, and the beautiful round berry is ready for applique.
We have new neighbours too.... Instead of white woollies, there are a group of enthusiastic young black ladies...."Welsh Blacks".....

"Welsh Blacks".....
Have a nice day!

Fijne dag!

Who won the Give-away????....Wie heeft de Give-away gewonnen???...

First of all a big thank you for all the birthday wishes! It was a special day, and I loved reading your reactions about what I would do with the money. Most of you read my thoughts.......fabrics, quilting books, and keep the rest for Dutch quiltshops....
Today I had planned for the grandchildren to draw the names of the winners, but that wasn't possible, soooo...we got in the car, and drove to 'Inhouse Quilting' in Narberth, a wonderful quiltshop, which is unfortunately closing on the 2nd of April. Until then, everything is for sale with 30% off....!!

You can see the shop on the right in the picture. With 30% off, I had to buy a few things of course...
I asked the owners, if they could do me a favour and draw names out of the bag. They were very happy to do so.

And the first name....for the first give-away....

5 meters of chintz border, was Wilma. She has this weblog (click).
Then she drew out the second name....

for the second give-away...

voor deze give-away....
and this is for...Anki (Annefred) who has this weblog (click).
Congratulations to both of you!
In the meantime I have ordered a few books, that have been on my wish-list a long time...

and some fabrics....don't you love the way the fabrics on the right have been packed?

The rest of the money I shall keep until I get to Holland...
And because I don't feel really happy unless I have some applique on the go, I started prepping my next Mary Simon block.....

Have a nice day!
P.S. I still feel terribly spoiled though....

Spring in Wales..........Lente in Wales

The weather has been so lovely that I went for a walk, not far, just around the block.

It is like being on holiday....only 5 minutes walk.....

There are lambs in the fields.....

En ja, er zijn lammetjes....

Basking in the sun.....

Ze liggen heerlijk te zonnen...

When you live in Wales, you can't help loving Welsh quilts. A few days ago I just had to make an antique Welsh quilt. Fabrics in the favourite colours of our granddaughter, because she was born in Wales, so this quilt will be for her eventually.

Purple and pink, not really my colours, but sometimes it is good to do something different. So I made the templates, as I am piecing it by hand...

And a day later....

En een dagje later......

....the centre of the quilt in the top right of the book. I love making this, and I even begin to like the colours....!

And these beautiful fabrics I got for my birthday from our daughter and son in law....

Lastly a picture of our little visitors. They sat there happily eating the seeds for quite a while...

Until Thursday!

Tot donderdag!

Birthday give-away........!!!......Verjaardag give-away.....!!!...

Today is my birthday. I have been really spoilt, and feel in a festive mood. My beloved and I even sat on the beach in the sunshine...!
Lots of presents, and apparently more to come this weekend...

A lot of money .. (guess what I shall do with that?)...beautiful CDs of Hans Bloemendal, a Jewish cantor in Amsterdam, and  of Bach's music, and a lovely scarf.
My cousin in Holland sent me some lovely things to make....

Her daughter had made a lovely sheep card for me.

Haar dochter Jessica had een schattig schaap kaartje voor me gemaakt.

And our son knows what I need when I am quilting....chocolate, loads of it!!

It was such beautiful weather, we went to the beach nearby...

We were there until 3 o'clock this afternoon. I did bring something to stitch, a flower for the Berry Street garden.....just imagine doing nothing...

Because it is such a wonderful day, I want you to enjoy it too. There are two different things I am giving away, one is 5 meters of the narrow edging that I put round my Baltimore blocks.....

And a nice modern piece of fabric with berries - because I am working on the Berry Street block of the Home Sweet Home quilt...

The only thing you have to do is to leave a comment on this post, and a guess what I am going to do with the money. You don't have to guess right, I just fancy reading your suggestions...:o))
And you could mention which of the two fabrics you prefer...
You have until Wednesday evening, and on Thursday I shall draw two names out of the hat!

Have a nice day,
Fijne dag verder
Jane
