"Scrappy..."

I always thought that a scrappy quilt was just putting together all different sorts of fabrics.
Until I started Esther's Love Entwined 1790 coverlet......the original looks to me like a scrappy quilt too, when I study the black and white photo, so I want the same feel for mine....

What struck me is how much time goes into carefully considering colour, but especially values of light and dark. To get that balance right is important, and every next step is another adventure into the unknown.
I have now sorted my fabrics by colour, but also into light, dark and medium values. I kept to dark and light for the triangles, but because of the different prints, some look darker and others lighter. It gives it a lively look anyway. I am hoping I can keep this up for the rest of the quilt!

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

Jane

You are doing a great job at finding the right balance. I am finding color selection for this quilt to be a bit tricky but am enjoying the challenge!

Echt prachtig! Auckje

Welterusten vanaf hier!
Groetjes uit Ommen, Ria.

Your work is stunning and the fabrics you have chosen are gorgeous. Just saw the black/white photo on the Yahoo site from your link. What a quilting challenge for the designer, Ester, to reproduce this quilt and then offer it for free. Will look forward to watching your progress.

Your scrappy look is wonderful. Thank you for explaining how you've used the different values. I agree on the time involved. I am trying something similiar on my reproduction era quilt. The extra time you spent considering values is apparent. Your block is well balanced and appealing.

I love the scrappy look! And I think that's what they had to do back in the 1700's. They couldn't go to a auiltshop and buy yards of fabrics. It were left overs and scraps. And you are a pro and inspiration on applique, socI love to watch your progress!

I love how scrappy you are making this. All those lovely fabrics to enjoy. :0)

Rina said...

Phyllis said...

Groetjes ineke

Beautiful Jane, I really like the scrappy look, I need to introduce more fabrics into mine, must go stash shopping this afternoon!

Ineke said...

You are so right about LE being an adventure. I have agonized for hours about colors, prints, solids, batiks, wovens. Where is my compass pointing? Wish I knew. lol

What a lovely selection of fabrics - the time that you are taking to choose them is really paying off!
Congrats on being a moderator on LE too - I'm sure you'll be great as you have already offered so much to the list.
