"Stonefields Lambs.......Stonefields Lammetjes"

My Stonefields blocks for the second month are finished, but they are a little bit different.
I had to make two 'Oscillateur' blocks.....

...en dat heb ik dus ook gedaan.

....and I did both of those.

I don't glue the fabrics onto the background, because as you may know, I don't like glue or starch or anything like that in my quilts. So I just quickly baste them on, and then I can needleturn.

There had to be two Square Pegs, but I think I might replace the star with something else. This does not look much like a square.

There had to be two of these Little Stars blocks...

But I found doing this block so incredibly boring, that I thought of something else....with an Irish flavour...
Does anyone know the name of the film for which Susan made the Stonefields quilt?

We have had a lot of mist in recent days, a lovely sight....

And then came the first frost of this autumn...

It is just as well that the neighbours have lovely warm coats on...

Sitting inside by the woodstove is nice too, lovely weather for making Stonefields hexagon flowers...

Every month I make seventeen of them, of the fabrics I have used for the blocks...

It seems bizarre that there are big new buds in the climbing hydrangea, when the winter is coming!

But it all looks so nice, also from the kitchen...

Sommige blaadjes zien er erg vreemd uit..

Some leaves look very strange...

..and the lacecap hydrangea has lovely white edged leaves...

....while the buddleia stands in its own fairy world.

I shall make some more flowers...

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"Memories of Balmesh...the Old Farmhouse"

Last week I took this out of the cupboard....do you remember it?
I started it three years ago, but became so homesick that I stopped. But now I am carrying on with it again. If you want to read all about the beginning, click on the label of Memories of Balmesh on the right in the list of labels. It is a long story, so make sure you sit comfortably.

It is a large quilt that I am designing, with a lot of applique. The layout is inspired by the 1790 Sundial quilt in the V&A. I have re-drawn the blocks of that quilt, but there were not enough of them, so I have designed nine 3 inch blocks too.

The subject is our old steading with a 4 acre field in Scotland, where we lived for nearly 6 years until we moved to Wales five years ago.
This was the first we saw of it, and if we hadn't had an appointment, we would have just driven on. What a mess it looked!

When we walked up the drive it didn't look any better.

The old farmhouse which stood higher than the newer one, dominated everything. There were loads of pigeons on and in the roof, the slates and windows were broken, and it looked terrible. In the evening, in the light of the moon, it looked rather spooky!

When we saw the old courtyard, ankle deep in muck, we thought it might be best to take all the buildings down, and just leave the walls and have a walled garden. Nearly all the buildings were leaking like sieves, and had not seen any paint in years. Most of the existing roofs were on the point of caving in.

The owner had taken the slates  from what we later called the 'roofless ruin', and all sorts of things were growing there. Lots of objects had been dumped there. But I had fallen totally in love with the whole place. What an adventure!

After we had bought the place, it took weeks before we had cleared the rubbish out of the building, so that we could get inside. And there was an old range! The dairyman used to live here with his family.

In the room next to it was an old hearth, and a cupboard, which was full of old medicine bottles. This room became our 'museum' which we filled with lots of old objects found around the farm.

We found two builders who quite liked the challenge to put a roof back again, and also to help with the other roofs, and the work could start. My husband helped with mixing the cement.

Here you can see the roofless ruin from the other side of the courtyard.

While the roof was being done, I used the old farmhouse as a garage for my little car. It only just fitted, with an inch to spare on either side.

It was so exciting to see it all happening, even though the two men didn't turn up for several months, which tested our patience somewhat!

But slowly it started happening, and it began to look like something.

Now we could start with lowering the old farmhouse, a great idea of my husband.

He quite enjoyed taking all the slates off the roof.

With the help of a neighbour the walls were knocked down, until the whole building was lower.

Hier wordt de laatste hand gelegd,

A last minute job,

...and this was the result, about a year later. A nice workshop for my husband, with my potting shed next to it, and the old dairyman's cottage we used as a garage.

From the front it looked a lot nicer.

From the field across the little road it now looked like a unified steading without competition from the old farmhouse.

Om dit middenblok heen.....

All around the centre block.....

....will come the four buildings around the courtyard. I had sketched them roughly,

....and started with the old farmhouse. First I found fabrics for the roofs and walls and put them together.
I used a fabric with handwriting for the walls of the smaller house, because I am sure those walls have lots of things to tell of.

Daarna kon ik verder met de raampjes....

Then I could carry on with the windows....

en struikjes...

and bushes....

....because I had planted lots of hydrangeas there, and other flowers.

My beloved said that there should be an old apple tree too,...

...because there was one. The whole neighbourhood enjoyed the apples, even the pigs of one of the neighbours.

And this is what it looks like. This one will be on the underside of the centre. It is 10 x 30 inches.

There is another story about the next one, this is the beginning stage. When this one is finished, I shall write another blog about it!

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"....Stonefields Romance...."

Stonefields by Susan Smith is a very romantic quilt. The quilt was made for a film which was shot in Ireland.
I find Ireland a wonderfully romantic country, and the quilt fits completely.
It speaks of old yellowed portraits...

....en verliefde stelletjes....

....young men in love....

...old wooden cabinets with doors, and behind the doors lots of small drawers and cubbyholes, even a secret drawer full of old love-letters.....once brought from the door by a little dog....

...lieve poezie plaatjes...

...lovely poesy album pictures....

...and dried flowers, a three leafed clover, a symbol of Ireland, the shamrock.

And of course of a horse, which carried the loving couple through secluded lanes, everywhere grown over with shamrock...

A wonderful quilt to work on and to dream by.
I often get asked how I make the many circles in this quilt...it is quite simple. I draw a circle on the fabric, cut it out with a small seam allowance, and start needle turning. It is nice and quick, precise, and it doesn't matter how large or how small the circle is.

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!
