"....Midge..."

This small sheep has a lot to answer for......!

She was tiny when I started looking after her. Her mother rejected her, so I fed her with the bottle. She was so small that I called her "Midge", after the tiny tiny Scottish midges.

Of course Midge had to feature on the border around the farmhouse in the 'Memories of Balmesh' quilt. She gave me a lot of joy, which is why the word 'joy' is next to her name.

She always wanted to be with me. Sometimes I sat on a  big stone in the top of the field above the farm, and then she came and laid down and went to sleep....

Midge was special. She followed me everywhere, and came as soon as I appeared in the field....

Midge was speciaal, ze volgde me overal, en kwam altijd naar me toe als ik in het weiland kwam...

She grew fast, and became best friends with another lamb in the same situation, who we called 'Ears', because you could only see her ears when she sat in the grass. Both of them became my own sheep.

But when we were planning to move to Wales, they could not come with us. So they went to a farmer up in the hills who we knew would look after them really well.
When I came back after a year, she knew me straight away and ran to and fro with happiness...

A year later she had two lambs of her own.....and I saw them too...

A few days ago the farmer in Scotland told us that she has triplets this year! Mother Midge!
But what has she to answer for, you may ask?
When we moved to Wales I took her shearling fleece with me, because I wanted to spin it....

Soon I got a spinning wheel, and I could spin Midge's fleece into lovely soft yarn!

So far I have 600g beautiful hanks of plied wool, for a large knitted shawl...

...so Midge can keep me nice and warm when it is cold..!
Next time I'll tell you about the fourth border with words, and then I can put it all together.  I hope it will be sooner than this time. I had a lot of backache, and sitting by the computer was the worst thing. As long as I kept moving it was fine, doing things like dusting, ironing, cooking...
Enjoy your week!

Fijne week allemaal!

"Hydrangeas..........Hortensias"

Why am I finding these letters such a chore? I am doing all sorts of other things, but I have to force myself to do another letter! But I am now working on the last letter-border, at last!
On this border are the flowers that I love so much - hydrangeas....flowers that I will always associate with Balmesh...and I miss them...

And not just one type, no, until I started to study them, I had no idea that there were so many types, with different leaves, flowers and colours. I ended up with 27 varieties...
There was already a nice white one in the garden....

But soon I planted another one that became pink in the autumn...a 'Paniculata'...

I could not resist the beautiful lace-caps...

There were pine trees in the garden, and I planted 'Annabelle' against some of those. Later she got lots of beautiful white blooms that looked wonderful in the dusk...

Of course I planted some other colours too...

Natuurlijk kwamen er ook andere kleuren bij...
There were always flowers by the back-door "for in the garden"...

The blue container was our letterbox.  There was no letterbox in the door, so the postman put the post in the box. The box had a brick on it to stop it blowing away!
A beautiful red hydrangea came too...

and the lovely 'Preziosa'... with changing colours...

Soon there was no space left in the garden, so we made a border along the old farmhouse .....

Sometimes I wonder if they are all still there.....my 27 different varieties...
Have a nice day!

Fijne avond!
