"Day out to Edinburgh....Dagje uit naar Edinburgh"

Early in the morning with the train. We walked through a hail/snow shower from the car to the station.

We moesten overstappen in Carlisle - even opwarmen in de mooie ouderwetse wachtkamer..

We had to change trains in Carlisle - the lovely old waiting room was nice and warm....

There was a passenger train with an old diesel engine.

And then we went on a fast train - a 'Pendolino' to Edinburgh. A little bit of snow on the way...

Nou... 'een beetje' sneeuw..?

Well..a 'little' bit..?

It is fun to see out train going slowly around a bend...it is exciting, as we don't travel by train very often..:o)

En toen waren we zo in Edinburgh. Sneeuw?? Nooit van gehoord... Maar koud dat het was..!!!

Then we were in Edinburgh. Snow?? Never heard of it....But it was cold!!!

Straight away we got a nice welcome..:) I wondered if that man's legs did not get cold...

There was another one, looking shivery. A doorman at a very expensive hotel.

Of course we wanted to go to the castle, but did we really have to climb up to that??

Perhaps we need a coffee first in one of the French cafes. Capuccino with millefeuille...yum....

Het gevaarte komt al wat dichterbij....

The imposing wall is getting closer...

...en eindelijk zijn we er.

....and at last we are there.

I am not sure if this is such a nice welcome...!

Wel een prachtig uitzicht...

But there is an impressive view....

The Scottish and British flag next to each other....perhaps no longer if there is another referendum...

We descend again, and yes, of course....imagine not to have anything to read..:o)

We climb up again...in Edinburgh you either go up or down..so lovely, all those colours.

En daar staat er warempel weer eentje....! Zijn hoofd is tenminste warm...:)

And here is another one...! At least his head is warm..:)

Ook leuk, die Schotse winkeltjes.

Those Scottish shops are nice.

Weer omlaag...

Down again..What about living on the top floor of that white house in the centre..?

Krijgen we al trek? Nou nee, geen haggis.....

Are we getting hungry yet? Uhm no, no haggis....

First we go down these steps, and then we look back...I think we are more fit than we thought :)

I want to look at Scottish painters in the National Gallery. No such luck,  the Scottish painters area is closed temporarily... But I did see a self-portrait of Rembrandt...:)

Een mooi uitzicht...

A beautiful view...

There are even people sitting on those seats, brrrrr.

A tiny restaurant, where they serve real Dutch pea-soup with smoked sausage. How amazing!!

Trams zijn er ook...

There are trams as well...

Another look at the castle, before we walk to the station.

Kan ik nee zeggen tegen carrot cake?

Can I resist carrot cake?

Vanuit de trein zien we weer besneeuwde bergen...

From the train we can see snowy mountains..

The snow of this morning is still there...it gets dark...it was a lovely day!

And I continue with my block. The first layer is on, now I can pin and baste the next layer.

Een vlindertje...

A butterfly...

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"Memories of Balmesh...the Old Farmhouse"

Last week I took this out of the cupboard....do you remember it?
I started it three years ago, but became so homesick that I stopped. But now I am carrying on with it again. If you want to read all about the beginning, click on the label of Memories of Balmesh on the right in the list of labels. It is a long story, so make sure you sit comfortably.

It is a large quilt that I am designing, with a lot of applique. The layout is inspired by the 1790 Sundial quilt in the V&A. I have re-drawn the blocks of that quilt, but there were not enough of them, so I have designed nine 3 inch blocks too.

The subject is our old steading with a 4 acre field in Scotland, where we lived for nearly 6 years until we moved to Wales five years ago.
This was the first we saw of it, and if we hadn't had an appointment, we would have just driven on. What a mess it looked!

When we walked up the drive it didn't look any better.

The old farmhouse which stood higher than the newer one, dominated everything. There were loads of pigeons on and in the roof, the slates and windows were broken, and it looked terrible. In the evening, in the light of the moon, it looked rather spooky!

When we saw the old courtyard, ankle deep in muck, we thought it might be best to take all the buildings down, and just leave the walls and have a walled garden. Nearly all the buildings were leaking like sieves, and had not seen any paint in years. Most of the existing roofs were on the point of caving in.

The owner had taken the slates  from what we later called the 'roofless ruin', and all sorts of things were growing there. Lots of objects had been dumped there. But I had fallen totally in love with the whole place. What an adventure!

After we had bought the place, it took weeks before we had cleared the rubbish out of the building, so that we could get inside. And there was an old range! The dairyman used to live here with his family.

In the room next to it was an old hearth, and a cupboard, which was full of old medicine bottles. This room became our 'museum' which we filled with lots of old objects found around the farm.

We found two builders who quite liked the challenge to put a roof back again, and also to help with the other roofs, and the work could start. My husband helped with mixing the cement.

Here you can see the roofless ruin from the other side of the courtyard.

While the roof was being done, I used the old farmhouse as a garage for my little car. It only just fitted, with an inch to spare on either side.

It was so exciting to see it all happening, even though the two men didn't turn up for several months, which tested our patience somewhat!

But slowly it started happening, and it began to look like something.

Now we could start with lowering the old farmhouse, a great idea of my husband.

He quite enjoyed taking all the slates off the roof.

With the help of a neighbour the walls were knocked down, until the whole building was lower.

Hier wordt de laatste hand gelegd,

A last minute job,

...and this was the result, about a year later. A nice workshop for my husband, with my potting shed next to it, and the old dairyman's cottage we used as a garage.

From the front it looked a lot nicer.

From the field across the little road it now looked like a unified steading without competition from the old farmhouse.

Om dit middenblok heen.....

All around the centre block.....

....will come the four buildings around the courtyard. I had sketched them roughly,

....and started with the old farmhouse. First I found fabrics for the roofs and walls and put them together.
I used a fabric with handwriting for the walls of the smaller house, because I am sure those walls have lots of things to tell of.

Daarna kon ik verder met de raampjes....

Then I could carry on with the windows....

en struikjes...

and bushes....

....because I had planted lots of hydrangeas there, and other flowers.

My beloved said that there should be an old apple tree too,...

...because there was one. The whole neighbourhood enjoyed the apples, even the pigs of one of the neighbours.

And this is what it looks like. This one will be on the underside of the centre. It is 10 x 30 inches.

There is another story about the next one, this is the beginning stage. When this one is finished, I shall write another blog about it!

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

Jane
