Dit nieuwe blokje voor Sarah Morrell was zo leuk om te doen!

This Sarah Morrell block was such fun to make!

Eerst even vlug neerleggen om te zien hoe het gaat worden...

First I put it the right way up quickly to see what it would look like...

Sarah Morrell is een patroon van Di Ford in Australie, die het heeft getekend naar aanleiding van een antieke quilt uit 1843. 

Sarah Morrell is a pattern by Di Ford in Australia, who made it based on an antique quilt from 1843.

Maar het is heel triest dat Di nu een een zeer zeldzame vorm van leukemie heeft.

But it is very sad to hear that Di has now been diagnosed with a very rare form of leukemia.

Gelukkig is ze heel positief over de behandeling die ze gaat ondergaan, en ze heeft de steun van quilters over de hele wereld die allemaal met haar meeleven en voor haar bidden.
Dus als ik deze quilt verder maak zal ik ook heel veel aan Di denken.

But she is very positive about the treatment she is going to get, and she is supported by quilters from all over the world, who are praying for her and sending well wishes.
So while I work on this quilt I will think of Di very often.

Zelf zit ik ook nog in de lappenmand, met een akelige hoest die maar niet weg wil!
Gisteren kwam de buurvrouw met iets lekkers, zodat ik niet hoefde te koken. Zo lief!!
 
I am still not well, with a cough that does not want to leave! Yesterday our neighbour came with something nice which meant that I did not have to cook! How sweet was that!

Sarah Morrell

We hebben dit jaar een nieuwe logee in huis. Haar naam is Sarah Morrell. Ze heeft al veel eerder willen komen, maar ze mocht er nooit in, want ik had het veel te druk met quilts maken voor iedereen in onze familie.
Ze brengt wel heel veel moois met zich mee....

This year we have someone staying in our house. Her name is Sarah Morrell. She has been wanting to come for years, but she wasn't allowed in, because I was too busy making quilts for the whole family.....
She does bring some beautiful things with her....

Ze voelt zich al helemaal thuis....

She has already made herself at home....

Het is wel een veeleisende dame...

And she is taking over... 

Ondanks dat ik in de lappenmand zit met een virus dat de rondte doet, moet ik maar gewoon meedoen....

Although I have caught a nasty virus, and don't feel very well, I just go along with her demands....

Maar dat is ook wel fijn, want het leidt af van de keelpijn en het hoesten...

But it is good in some ways, because it is a distraction from a sore throat and a lot of coughing...

 Want ik moet me goed concentreren op hoe het allemaal in elkaar moet..

Because I have to concentrate on how everything fits together...

En needleturn is altijd fijn om te doen...

And needleturn is always fun to do... 

Vooral als het steeds mooier wordt....

Especially when the result is this....

Soms is er zomaar een verrassend blok - geen applique- niets in elkaar zetten, zomaar een mooi plaatje...

Sometimes there is a surprise block no piecing, no applique, just cut it out of the fabric (thank you Donna!)

En een blok opnieuw tekenen, gewoon omdat ik de originele mooier vindt, is ook wel leuk om te doen, maar al die extra naadjes.......was dat eigenlijk wel zo'n goed idee?

Re-drawing a block, just because I prefer the original, yes, that is fun too, but all those extra small seams.....was it really such a good idea after all?

Uiteindelijk is hij toch af, en ik begin me intussen al wat beter te voelen.

At last this block is finished, and I am beginning to feel a little better.

Een gesneuveld vogeltje......a little bird casualty

Het eerste blok van Sarah Morrell is er! 

The first block of Sarah Morrell is done!

Het was heel leuk om de broderie perse te doen....
....maar op een gegeven moment waren er wel twee vogeltjes...

It was fun doing the broderie perse....
....but I ended up with two little birds.... 

 ....want de eerste rafelde te veel om zijn snaveltje. Ik had niet door dat de stof zo erg zou rafelen.

....because the first one had a frayed beak.... I had not realised that the fabric would fray that much.

Maar uiteindelijk kwam alles weer goed! Ik liet gewoon een beetje meer van de achtergrond zitten, en omdat ik met een creme draadje appliqueer, valt het niet op.

But at last everything was fine again! I just left a bit more of the background fabric above the beak, and because I applique with a light thread, it does not really notice.

Christmas...2018...Kerst

Kerst is wel een mooie tijd om iets nieuws te gaan doen.

Een Broderie Perse blok?

Christmas is a good time to start something new.

A Broderie Perse block?

Ja dit wordt het eerste blok van de Sarah Morrell quilt (patroon van Di Ford) die ik al jaren lang heb willen maken. Maar steeds kwamen er eerst weer anderen aan de beurt. Elke keer keek ik er even naar. Maar elke keer werd het weer gauw weggestopt, diep in de kast.

Yes, it is going to be the first block of the Sarah Morrell quilt (pattern by Di Ford) that I have wanted to make for years. But every time other quilts had to be made, and when I had a look at the pattern I quickly put it away again in a deep drawer.

 Maar nu Hope haar quilt heeft, kan ik eindelijk beginnen!

But now Hope has her quilt, and I can start on it at last!

Hier is het uitgeknipt en op de achtergrond gelegd. Het needleturn feest kan beginnen!

Here it is cut out and laid on the background. The needleturn feast can start!

Maar eerst moesten er nog wat Engelse Mince Pies gemaakt worden. Zonder mince pies is het geen Kerst, vindt mijn lief.

But first mince pies had to be made, because without them it is not Christmas, says my husband.

Allemaal bodempjes en dekseltjes, met daar tussen wat 'mincemeat', een soort rozijnen vulling. Typisch Engels!

Lots of bases and lids, with mincemeat, a sort of raisin  filling  in between. Typically English!

Eindelijk komen ze uit de oven, en dat wordt smullen!

At last they come out of the oven and they look nice!

Heel vroeg 's morgens is de zon er al, maar heel eventjes.

Early in the morning the sun appears, just for a little while.

Nog even koffie drinken in een heel leuk tuincentrum waar ze ook prachtige dingetjes verkopen, en daar vind ik een mooie lezende engel!

An outing to a lovely garden centre with a wonderful gift shop for coffee, and there I find a lovely reading angel!

Om in de kerst stemming te komen is Google ook al aan de applique! 

Google is showing applique to get a Christmas feeling!

En de dag voor Kerst nog een keer!

And once again on Christmas Eve!

Intussen bedacht ik dat dit Mary Simon blok ook nog een keer af moest....

Then I suddenly thought that I should finish this Mary Simon block too...

Maar dit is op het moment nog leuker!

But at the moment this is more irresistible!

Update and a Welsh Quilt

Het is alweer anderhalf jaar geleden dat ik voor het laatst iets geschreven heb!
Intussen is er veel gebeurd. Veel verdrietige maar ook mooie dingen, en dan natuurlijk wennen aan de nieuwe omgeving.
Inmiddels heb ik de draad weer opgepakt en vond dat ik weer eens een blogje moest schrijven.
Ik heb vooral aan de Welsh quilt voor kleindochter Hope gewerkt. 

It is 18 months ago that I wrote my last blog!
In the meantime a lot has happened. Sad and also happy things, and of course I had to get used to the new environment. Now I have picked up my threads again, and thought I'd better write a blog!
Most of the past months I worked on the Welsh quilt for granddaughter Hope.

Omdat ze zo van roze en paars houdt, is de achterkant een roze stofje.

Because she loves pink and purple so much, I made the backing of a pink fabric.

Eindelijk was het quilten klaar, en ging ik repen snijden van dezelfde roze stof voor de binding.....

At last the quilting was finished, and I cut strips of the same pink fabric for the binding....

...en aan elkaar zetten, zodat ik de hoeken mitred kon doen.

...and put them together, so that I could mitre the corners. 

Toen die er met de hand aangezet. De hele quilt is met de hand gedaan.

Then I stitched it on by hand. The whole quilt has been done by hand. 

Ja, dat leek wel goed. 

Yes, that looked fine.

Even een foto vanaf de overloop, gemaakt door mijn lief. En opgestuurd naar Texas. Niet zonder angst, want o, als hij eens niet over zou komen? Natuurlijk wel met aangetekende post.

A picture from the stairwell, taken by my husband. And then I could send it off to Texas. Not without trepidation, for what if it should get lost? Of course I did send it tracked and signed.

Na drie weken was hij er nog niet, en ik begon me wel behoorlijk zorgen te maken. Hij scheen in Chicago te zijn blijven steken. Maar mijn vriendin Anne-Marieke wist zeker dat hij vast bij de douane was... Dat hielp.
Intussen een vliegend twee-daags bezoekje aan mijn moeder (97) in Nederland. Schiphol was in kerststemming.

After three weeks it still had not arrived and I was getting very worried. It looked as if it had got stuck in Chicago. But my friend Anne-Marieke  was certain that it was with the customs... That helped. In the meantime I flew to Holland for a quick two day visit to my 97 year old mother. Schiphol was ready for Christmas.

Maar eindelijk, 4 weken later, zou de quilt bezorgd worden, en ik kreeg een telefoontje of ik wilde Skypen. Ja natuurlijk, zo kon ik het mooi meemaken. Hope wist nergens van!

But finally, 4 weeks later, the quilt was out for delivery, and I got a telephone call. Did I want to Skype? Yes, of course, it would be lovely to see her unpack it. Hope knew nothing about it at all.

Haar broertje Josiah ook niet, anders had hij het geheim misschien wel uit opwinding verklapt... Eindelijk kon ze de quilt zien....

Neither did her brother Josiah, otherwise he might have told the secret out of sheer excitement... At last she could see the quilt....

En ze was er erg blij mee ...:) Gelukkig! Het was koud in Texas, dus ze kon er lekker onder kruipen.

And she loved it....:) Great! It was cold in Texas so she could snuggle underneath it.

Inmiddels heb ik nog weer een paar besjes vastgezet....

In the meantime I have been sewing a few berries......

And the Christmas tree is up again!

"Antique quilts"

Het nieuwe blok gaat niet erg vlug - veel te veel leuke afleiding hier! :)

The new block is not progressing very fast - too many wonderful distractions here! :)

Maar het is ook wel een vrij ingewikkeld blok, met veel laagjes.

But it is a rather complicated block, with lots of layers.

Voordat ik deze bloem kan vastzetten, moeten alle onderliggende laagjes af zijn.

Before I can sew this flower, all the underlying pieces have to be finished.

En op deze bloemblaadjes moet straks het midden van deze bloem.

The centre of the flower, with several pieces, will go on top of these petals.

En toen zag ik opeens iets op het internet (klik hier om te zien waar het over gaat)

And then I saw something on the internet (click here to see the details)

Daar moest ik echt wel naar toe. Mijn lief wilde wel mee, want in Leyburn is ook een spoorweg....
Onderweg zagen we mooie bloesems...

I had to go there of course. My husband was happy to come, especially as there is a preserved railway in Leyburn....
On the way we saw some beautiful blossoms...

En een prachtig Swaledale schaap...

De quilts waren achter glas...

The quilts were behind glass

maar dat was niet erg, want ze waren goed te zien.

but that did not matter, because it was easy to look at them.

En ik was helemaal verliefd op deze prachtige stukken uit 1780. 

I totally fell in love with these beautiful pieces from 1780.

En hier nog eentje, ook zo'n antieke....

And here is another one, also antique....

Deze was een eeuw later, iets bedaarder van kleur.

This one was about a century later, the colours a little softer.

Bijna bij huis, zagen we dat de koeien buiten zijn! Hier ligt een dame met klein grut.

Nearly home, just down the road, we saw that the cows are out! Here is a lady with several small calves.

En opeens zag ik dat er een kalfje aan het drinken was..

I suddenly saw one of the calves drinking..

"Of ben je soms jaloers?"

"Or are you jealous?"

Ook ben ik begonnen met het doorquilten van mijn Baltimore quilt, die ik in 2011 af had.....

I have also started quilting my Baltimore quilt, which I finished in 2011....
