"...Goldwork..."

In what seems like a previous life, I started goldwork.
My tutor was Ruth Chamberlin, who had learnt her craft with the Sisters of Bethany. They executed a lot of designs by the church architect Sir Ninian Comper (click)

I had to make a sampler of lots of different techiques, and then decorate it with my own designs.
First I had to learn to dress a slate frame, and the first sample was laying down gold threads and stitching them down with silk.

Hetzelfde moest ik doen met dikker goud.

Then I did the same with thicker gold.

After that I tried 'laid work' with silk and gold over the top.
En een variatie...

And a variation...

These gold threads have been stitched over pieces of string.

en ook goud leer 'gevuld' met vilt.

and gold leather 'filled' with felt.

Goud over kartonnetjes gelegd,

Gold laid over card,

en dikkere kartonnetjes.

and thicker card.

More string, felt and 'drawing' a pattern on the gold with silk.

Also I started using silk in a motif.

After that, I used different colours of silk, and made a motif with directional gold.

Natuurlijk moest er ook een monogram op.

Of course there had to be a monogram.

I had to design a bigger centre piece for working on silk fabric.

Daarin kon ik ook met kraaltjes werken.

I could use beads in it.

When that was finished, I could fill up all the left over spaces with flowers ( I still have to add gold here),

granaatappels,

pomegranates,

en eikels met kraaltjes over vilt.

and acorns with beads over felt.

In the sunlight you can clearly see the depth.

As you can see, I have not finished the sampler yet,

Fijne dag!

and who knows, I might carry on with it one of these days.
Have a nice day!

Jane

Fascinerend!

Breath taking, I found I was holding my breath while looking at you beautiful gold art work, (as you know my mum use to do it, she had a lovely big book on it but I can not find it). How wonderful to have a step by step tutorial on each piece. I was notching up the hours it must have taken then realised why tapestry took years to make with many ,many women working on them. You had one of the best tutors what a treat to be under some one like that. Hugs Glenda

Goldwork is high on my list of things still to learn. I really love the centre medallion you designed! How lucky you were to have such a good teacher. You don't have much left -- maybe you are thinking of finishing it up?

In any case, thanks for the inspiration!

Oh, My!!! This is absolutely beautiful work. I've never been exposed to "gold work" before, but I can tell you are mastering it. Your stitches are so nicely done, and the different kinds of gold with all the dimensionality is truly enchanting. Even the slate frame captures my fancy!
