"Day out to Edinburgh....Dagje uit naar Edinburgh"

Early in the morning with the train. We walked through a hail/snow shower from the car to the station.

We moesten overstappen in Carlisle - even opwarmen in de mooie ouderwetse wachtkamer..

We had to change trains in Carlisle - the lovely old waiting room was nice and warm....

There was a passenger train with an old diesel engine.

And then we went on a fast train - a 'Pendolino' to Edinburgh. A little bit of snow on the way...

Nou... 'een beetje' sneeuw..?

Well..a 'little' bit..?

It is fun to see out train going slowly around a bend...it is exciting, as we don't travel by train very often..:o)

En toen waren we zo in Edinburgh. Sneeuw?? Nooit van gehoord... Maar koud dat het was..!!!

Then we were in Edinburgh. Snow?? Never heard of it....But it was cold!!!

Straight away we got a nice welcome..:) I wondered if that man's legs did not get cold...

There was another one, looking shivery. A doorman at a very expensive hotel.

Of course we wanted to go to the castle, but did we really have to climb up to that??

Perhaps we need a coffee first in one of the French cafes. Capuccino with millefeuille...yum....

Het gevaarte komt al wat dichterbij....

The imposing wall is getting closer...

...en eindelijk zijn we er.

....and at last we are there.

I am not sure if this is such a nice welcome...!

Wel een prachtig uitzicht...

But there is an impressive view....

The Scottish and British flag next to each other....perhaps no longer if there is another referendum...

We descend again, and yes, of course....imagine not to have anything to read..:o)

We climb up again...in Edinburgh you either go up or down..so lovely, all those colours.

En daar staat er warempel weer eentje....! Zijn hoofd is tenminste warm...:)

And here is another one...! At least his head is warm..:)

Ook leuk, die Schotse winkeltjes.

Those Scottish shops are nice.

Weer omlaag...

Down again..What about living on the top floor of that white house in the centre..?

Krijgen we al trek? Nou nee, geen haggis.....

Are we getting hungry yet? Uhm no, no haggis....

First we go down these steps, and then we look back...I think we are more fit than we thought :)

I want to look at Scottish painters in the National Gallery. No such luck,  the Scottish painters area is closed temporarily... But I did see a self-portrait of Rembrandt...:)

Een mooi uitzicht...

A beautiful view...

There are even people sitting on those seats, brrrrr.

A tiny restaurant, where they serve real Dutch pea-soup with smoked sausage. How amazing!!

Trams zijn er ook...

There are trams as well...

Another look at the castle, before we walk to the station.

Kan ik nee zeggen tegen carrot cake?

Can I resist carrot cake?

Vanuit de trein zien we weer besneeuwde bergen...

From the train we can see snowy mountains..

The snow of this morning is still there...it gets dark...it was a lovely day!

And I continue with my block. The first layer is on, now I can pin and baste the next layer.

Een vlindertje...

A butterfly...

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

Jane

Heerlijk zo'n dagje Schotland!
Groetjes,
Floor

what a beautiful day you had - with all that walking you must have stayed warm. The castle and all that you show look so lovely. I have a little Scottish blood in me so it is always nice to look at photos from the country one set of my ancestors lived. It is nice to travel by train now and then isn't it. I would not have been able to resist the carrot cake.

Thank you for sharing your visit to Edinburgh. There are so many places I'd like to see and not enough time, so I really enjoy these when bloggers post about their travels. Thank you, Jane.

Looks like a fine day indeed! Thanks for sharing photos of your trip! Your block is coming along nicely, you are much more advanced in appliqué than I am, I can do it but simpler blocks, not Baltimore Album.

Thank you for such a wonderful post. I have never seen real snow, only in photos and yours were so natural. I also have a bit of scottish in me so it was lovely to visit, I'd leave the haggis but the coffee and cake looked delicious. I'm amazed at how quickly your block is going, it's going to be amazing.

Hi Jane!
Discovered your blog about 2 months ago and have enjoyed reading all of your posts each night as the day winds down.
You have such talent.... your work is incredibly beautiful and it is such a treat to see your quilts develop as you finish each block. Quilting is one of my favorite pastimes, as is gardening, which is why I feel so welcome following your blog.
Your gentle personality also comes through each of your posts Jane; the more we read the more we feel like we've met.
I look so forward to seeing the pictures you post, such beauty in every photo ( and I am very partial to the "sheep" pictures!)
My husband and I will be visiting England,Scotland and Wales this coming May and after seeing so many of your pictures, I can't wait!
Please keep those wonderful posts coming!
Following from Buckingham, PA,
Kathy

you certainly saw plenty in Edinburgh such a beautiful city, it has an underground town too as well not lived in of course but they do tours of it, mind you it was a bit creepy!
Now you are back home and stitching again, what a lovely project you are working on
