"Reverse Applique?"

The next part of Esther's Love Entwined BOM has some reverse applique in it.
In reverse applique a part of the fabric on top is cut away, and the seam allowance is turned under, and appliqued, so that the fabric underneath becomes visible.

Perhaps you would like to see how I do that. First I draw a thin line around the freezer paper pattern on the fabric,

Then I pin the leaf in the right place on the background fabric.....under the overlay with the pattern on it, so that I can see where everything goes...

...take off the freezer paper and the overlay and baste them. I had already cut a small slit in the centre of the leaf for the reverse applique part..

I then start to needleturn around the outside of the leaf.

When that is done, I cut little slits halfway into the seam allowance around the inside, but I don't cut all the way to the point yet, and I start to needleturn.

After I cannot really carry on with needleturning, I cut right into the point.

When I get to the point, I take two extra stitches.....

And carry on stitching along the other side. You can see how the background fabric is revealed.

I do the same at the other point, and it is done.

Here is an example of one of my Baltimore blocks that has been stitched completely in reverse applique. Only here I have cut parts out of the background fabric to reveal the fabric behind that.

On the leaf of Love Entwined I am going to applique the same circles that are also on the ring around the compass.

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

Jane

Maar "what's in a name..."

Groetjes,
Floor

Dank je wel weer.

Thank you Jane, that's very helpful! Like Bunny, I've used the starch method since my needleturn wasn't good. But I keep trying, took a class, and I keep practicing. You give me the confidence that I might be able to do it! Oh, and I love how you've used the same fabrics that you used on your ring and dots!

Bedankt voor de heldere en duidelijke uitleg. Super, zo leer je nog eens iets. Je werk is prachtig!

Groetjes,
Linda

Thanks for this. I''m always a bit anxious about reverse applique. I can't wait to see how this portion of the coverlet develops :0)

geappliceerde Baltimore! Veel plezier met je blaadjes-met-rondjes!
Groetjes van Ageeth

yes that is the same way that I do it. You do beautiful work! anyone that doesn't no how to do reverse applique should be able to learn from your photos alone

A great explanation of reverse appliqué. I really enjoy your stitching, so precise and neat.

I finally overcame my fear of RA on my current quilt. Your work is perfect and your pictures are so helpful to explain the method.

Thanks for the great explanation and photos of how you do reverse appliqué, especially those tricky inner points. Your stitching is just superb. I'm enjoying following your progress on LE.

Thanks Jane for sharing this. Only started doing reverse applique when doing some DJ blocks recently. This is going to be tricky with those long sharp slits. Always have problems with the fabric fraying when I get to those inside points. Your stitches are invisible, absolutely beautiful.
groetjes

Fijne dag ineke

Oh Jane there is so much eye candy here to look at, your Baltimore block is breath taking. Love the colours you used. Thanks so so much for the tutorial, so many clear photo's and lots of step by step directions I could follow it all. Your wee circles will look perfect there as a connection to the centre. I'm so happy I'm way behind you and can learn from all you Dutch Guru's. Cheers Glenda

Hallo Jane,
Groetjes,
Marja
