"If you go down in the woods today......Als je vandaag naar het bos gaat

you're sure of a big surprise....."
"Today's the day the teddybears have their picnic".....That lovely song that you can't get out of your mind when you have heard it again...

It all started with this fabric and this pattern....

I can't remember when or where I bought the fabric, but I could not resist it. So.... when I was thinking about this "Skeery Woods" block, I suddenly got it. Of course, the Teddybear's picnic! Here is the whole block:

There will be some more teddies, when the next block is ready, and the hill from that can overlap on this block.
And of course it comes from Sue Garman's pattern 'All Around the Town', available from honeybeefabrics.

On Easter-Monday we went to a ploughing-match. Lots of lovely old tractors and ploughs, and also a few horses...

Afterwards we went to a farm where the grass had been mown, and was collected for silage by a big John Deere Forage Harvester. I was invited to come along in it for a while - it is far above the ground - very exciting!

And the view was nice...

En er was een mooi uitzicht..

Now it is back to work!

En nu weer hard aan het werk...!

All Around the Town - block 1, 2, 3......

Here are the first three blocks, very basic at the moment, without add-ons, but they will come!
On top of the first house stood a whale-weathervane, but the new inhabitant is not into whales, so it was taken down, and instead of it, a locomotive called 'Percy' was hauled up on the roof! He quite likes it up there, makes a change from being on the ground all the time.....
And now it is no longer called the 'Whale House', but 'Railway House'. The front door has been painted too, if you click on the photo you can see it better. Perhaps other nice things will be added.....

To the right of this block, in the corner, you cazn just see the lake, with a sail-boat in it, of course. Something has to be put on the sails, but I have to think about that. Caleb's name is on the flag, so perhaps his year of birth..? The block looks a bit strange, as if the boat is going to be pushed over by the hill, but that is the hill for round the corner. It will all become clear later...

Next to the rolling hill, around the corner, is another house, which also needs a few things added to it....It looks a nice house to live in, with lots of little rooms, one for applique, one for quilting, one for my fabrics,...but no, of course, the quilt is for Caleb!!  Although....perhaps he wouldn't mind me having just a few rooms...?

Here you can see the whole pattern by Susan Garman, available from Quakertown Quilts, and from Melissa at Honeybeefabrics. She has a wonderful shop and is lovely to deal with.

Have a nice day1

Fijne dag nog!

Mary Simon again... Alweer Mary Simon....

While I am busy making berries for the next block, I suddenly thought that you might like to see the Mary Simon blocks I have made so far. (Click on the photos to see them bigger).
This was the first one:

I really enjoyed making the basket. Instead of bias-strips, I made freezer paper templates.
The second block looks like this:

The birds in striped pyamas were fun to do, and the wings of the little bird on the right are made of a 'Queen Victoria' fabric to make it more British.
Then came this one:

Again this one was fun to make, espcially the flowers and rose-buds.
Next in turn was the Cornucopia block;

The little bird on the right is so sweet, he looks as if he has a crown on his head...
And this one you have seen last week:

And now I am working on the block with 150 berries. I make about 10 at the time, and applique them on. They are put down very carefully when they are just made, but it is amazing how they travel around the house (perhaps brushed along by my skirt?), and I found one in the kitchen this afternoon!
The blocks are reproductions of an old quilt, called 'Mary Simon'. For those who would like to make it too, you can buy the pattern here (click).
Next time I'll show the progress with the 'All Around the Town' quilt....

See you then!

Tot ziens!

Assembly Line...... Lopende band werk....

"What on earth are you doing now?" my husband asks.  "Uhhm, I am making 150 circles for berries..." "One hundred and fifty????"
He is now sure that I have gone round the twist..!
But I need them for a little bird who is going to have a feast in the next Mary Simon block.

I am making these circles (in 7 different sizes) from index card. Then I cut out the red fabric with a seam allowance and make a gathering stitch all around the edge. I pop the index card circle in the centre, draw the thread, iron it, take the card out carefully when the fabric is cold, and pull the thread tighter again. All the different sizes go in little bags to keep them separate until I can applique them on.
In between we sometimes go for a little drive through the hills....

Tussendoor gaan we soms even rijden in de heuvels....

When I was working on the Dear Jane for several years I was a one-quilt woman, but since I finished that, I am like a child in a sweetshop - don't know what to try next....
I am working on 3 Baltimores, the Civil War Bride,  the Home Sweet Home, Phebe, the Welsh quilt........
And then suddenly, Teresa comes along with her wonderful blog, and I have got the answer as to which quilt I should make for our grandson Caleb... It's the 'All Around the Town' by Sue Garman, available from Quakertown Quilts.

I have just ordered some very light blue fabric for the sky, and raided my stash to see what suitable fabrics I have. Why don't I have any roof, brick or wood fabric???
Anyway, I shall do something, and add some fun things here and there. It is a lovely pattern and I am looking forward to starting.
After all, making a small boy happy is more important than a quilt on my kitchen-wall.(the Home Sweet Home)....I think.

Enjoy your weekend!

Fijn weekend!

Mary Simon Album....

The Mary Simon Albun block is finished - this time there were about 126 pieces.......

I really enjoyed making this block.
And sometimes I go for a walk....even when it is damp and misty...

Looking through a gap in the hedge on the hill I saw our house...

And---we discovered a new quiltshop, 'Isabeau', about 15 minutes drive from our house. My beloved took photos, his greatest hobby...

I did not notice anything...was busy studying fabrics...which one will be suitable for Baltimores?..

There were drawers too....but I did not dare to look in them..perhaps next time..!

And lots of notions on the wall, you can always think of some you really do need.....

That shop is on the way when we go and see our grandchildren...! Isn't that wonderful?

Have a nice day

Fijne avond

A Welsh castle.... Een kasteel in Wales......

In between everything else I am working on a different Baltimore.... This block I drew last week, and this is the beginning. I have to add some sheep, of course, and some daffodils in the edge, as daffodils are a symbol of Wales.

Here you can see the pattern....

Hier zie je het patroon...

And of course I am also working on the Mary Simon block:

This is where I was going to say something about my method of working with an overlay. The whole pattern is drawn onto plastic..(click on the pictures to see them bigger)

Then all the pieces are drawn on freezerpaper... Usually I cut them out so that I have a window template and can audition the right fabric....Sometimes it takes a while before I have found the perfect piece...

Here a close-up... There are edges that will be overlapped by another piece. I just stipple these edges and cut the seam allowance alightly wider, and that edge does not have to be sewn. I iron the templates on the fabric and draw around them with my white Clover pen...

Then I can start the applique... I use a long thin straw needle, no.11, which is great for turning the edges under. My favourite pair of scissors (very small) has one rounded edge, so that I don't cut in the underlying fabric when I cut into the seam allowance....

Sometimes we go and help with the calves.....

Now I have to go shopping first, otherwise there won't be anything to eat... and then I shall visit my favourite weblogs!
Have a nice day!

Fijne dag allemaal!

Civil War Bride blocks...........Civil War Bride blokken

This was the first block I made of the Civil War Bride quilt, last year in spring. We had spent three months in rented accommodation on a farm in Wales, until we had found and bought our house. All my fabrics were in storage during that time. When I see this block I remember the joy of seeing and stroking my fabrics again...!!

After that I made the block with strawberries....

Daarna maakte ik het blok met aardbeien....

And a few days ago I finished the third block....

It is a lovely quilt to make. You can see more photos here. (click)
Have a nice day

Fijne dag
