I love quilts, especially antique quilts, either applique or pieced,
and I want to share my journeys in quilting !

But, my "Threads and Treasures" sometimes include embroidery, painting, or spinning wool
and weaving

"Quilts........Een dagje uit........A day out.."

"Who wants to come and see some antique quilts?"

That sounded like a great idea, and five of our quilt-group went. We went to Swansea with the train, on a dark, foggy day....

When we got to Swansea, we had coffee first, of course, with wonderful cake!

I should have asked someone to take all five of us at once....

The exhibition was in the Maritime Museum, at the harbour, where there was a nice light-ship...

Inside we saw a beautiful craze quilt, that looked very rich and warm, with lovely colours.....it was a pity that the quilts were folded in half in a glass box....

And a close-up...

Nog een close-up..

Next to it was a quilt made of flannel shirts....

with large quilting-stitches, that looked beautiful on the flannel...

Next to that was the log-cabin. What a beauty!

En daarnaast de log-cabin. Wat was die mooi!
It had all sorts of fabrics in it....

Allerlei stofjes waren er in verwerkt...
A close-up...

Hier nog een close-up..

There was also an exhibition of paintings by John Uzzell Edwards, who is really inspired by these quilts. This one I really liked...

He loves all the colours, and uses bits of wool and other things in his paintings......I think here he used a cotton-reel as a stamp...

Here is another one of his paintings, presumably inspired by the log-cabin quilt...

In the museum there was something else that was funny. We could not resist this. My photos of the others didn't come out, as I was laughing too much, but one of the others took this one...

All the while we were in the museum, there was  a lovely smell of pancakes, from the restaurant downstairs, so it was soon time to sit down again, and eat pancakes. In the meantime someone else from the quilt group had come....

We had a wonderful day, and it was time to go home again...!

"Give sorrow words, the grief that does not speak,
whispers the o'er-fraught heart, and bids it break..."
beautiful words written by Shakespeare in Macbeth, and almost from the start very applicable to this quilt full of memories. Around the house are words, all words that mean Balmesh to me. We have experienced so many beautiful and sad things there.
With these words I want to let you share in this piece of Scotland that I loved so much. This quilt is a way of working though these memories.

The letters are celtic, because there was a lot of celtic history in that part of Scotland.
Below the house is the name 'Balmesh', and to the right 'stars'. There was no light pollution, and I have never seen so many stars, especially when I went out in the dark night to shut up the hen-house.
To the left is 'skies', because I often just stood and looked at the beautiful skies, always different...

To the right of the house you see 'Angus', 'field' and 'change'. I often walked through the fields, they were very important to me. Angus was my special calf, a black Aberdeen Angus, and one of the first to stay on the farm for the first months of his life. I loved feeding and caring for him.

Even when he was a lot bigger and was in the field, he always came when I appeared....

And of course I could not resist, despite my clothes, climbing over the fence.... just for a cuddle....

The letters are made from ultrasuede. First I drew the alphabet onto template plastic, and then drew round those on the suede and cut them out.

It is a very slow and boring job, and it takes far too long, because every letter has to be appliqued on to the background fabric. It makes me feel quite restless...! "Why don't you just glue them on" says my beloved...
But the result is quite good, don't you think?

Off to carry on with the next two borders....
Have a nice day!

Fijne dag!

"Het Hondje van de Buurman........The Neighbour and his Dog"

Yes, I am still here.... After a very busy month, life will get back to 'normal' hopefully! I hope you are all well.
At last I can now pick up the "Memories of Balmesh" quilt saga again.....
Next to the entrance of the drive up to our farm was a tiny cottage. That is where Paul lived, with his dog and four cats. The dog was called Eddie, and he was always around. He greeted us when we came home and accompanied us to the back door. So I had to dedicate a little block to him.....

Very soon we became friends with Paul. That was incredibly handy, because he could do anything from plumbing to making bookcases, and he often called in just at the right moment when something had gone wrong.
He always drove up into the courtyard with his car, which was loaded with all sorts of tools, just in case he needed something...and Eddie always came too.....

Of course he could never leave without coffee.....

Hij kon natuurlijk nooit weggaan zonder koffie...
Paul also helped Alan to take down the top half of the old farm house.....

A year later it looked like this....

Without Paul and Eddie life at Balmesh would have been a lot more difficult, so that is the reason for this little block. Here is the whole block...

And now I have to start looking at all of your blogs, because I have hardly had time for that!
Have a nice day!

Fijne dag allemaal!
