"De Eerste Rij.........The First Row"

The squirrel block has 38 leaves, so that will take me a little while....

Just for a change from the leaves, I put the first row together last night, sitting by the fire, as spring does still seem far away...
It is exciting to see the blocks together. I put the table in the centre, because Nicholas and Catalina are very hospitable.....and they have a beautiful oak table....

Fijne Pasen!

Happy Easter!

"Lijster.......Thrush"

This was probably an American Robin in the original quilt, but I have made it into a Thrush, hoping, that it will become spring one of these days....!
We don't have snow in our part of Wales, but it is dreadfully cold.

I was somewhat bothered about the next pattern. They are most likely eagles, travelling around with circuses in the 1860s, when the original quilt was made, but I do not like them, and they don't fit in Catalina's Paradise quilt.

After thinking about other things that like sitting in trees, I had the idea of squirrels, the nice red ones that live in Holland and Scotland, and in a few parts of Wales and England.

To keep the character of the quilt, I took them out of another quilt, the Gorsuch Baltimore from 1840.  This pattern is on my To Do list, and comes from Australia, drawn by Margo Hardie (click)

Fijne dag!

So now I can start the squirrel block!
Have a nice day!

"Lentebruidje........Bride in Spring"

Yesterday it was exactly four years ago that Nicolas and Catalina were married, on the first day in spring. It was not so cold then as it was yesterday!
But it was quite fitting that I should have finished the new 'bride' yesterday.

My husband was always afraid that the other one would have done him in, with her fat legs and big hands.....;o) I have a feeling that they suit each other much better now.

Yesterday, while the wind was howling around the house and we heard the rain driving against the window, I began stitching the next block, nice and cosy by the fire...

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"Hannibal...."

You will probably know that Hannibal was the commander who took his army over the Alps to Italy, more than 2000 years ago, the army included elephants which was unusual.
That is perhaps why elephants were often called Hannibal. When the original quilt "Bird of Paradise" was made, during the 1860's, there were lots of circuses in America, with elephants of that name. Perhaps that is why is the name 'Hanible' is on the blanket over the elephant in the original quilt. I did not put a name on my elephant.

But who is this strange little man? I have altered the pattern a bit to make him look a bit more 'manly', but he is very strange. In the meantime I have read lots of old newspapers from those years, and in one of them was an interesting story. Perhaps it was about this little man?
There was a heavy storm during a circus performance, and in the New York Clipper, July 26, 1862, is a report that a tiger had escaped from a cage, and that "the man who kept the elephant Hannibal, stood in front of the huge brute, with his hands upon his tusks, as pale as a corpse."

The elephant has got a small eye... from the fabric next to it....

I only have to do 3 blocks now, but you may remember that I was not happy with the 'bride' block..
Verschillende keren heb ik een nieuwe getekend.....

Several times I drew a different one....

But finally I have hit on the right one, so before I make the last three blocks, I shall alter the bride...
Fijne dag!

Enjoy your day

"Paardjes...............Horses"

This will be a nice block for Catalina, who loves horses so much.

I was dreading the applique of the horses, just look at the naarow space between their legs, but it was much easier than I thought.

To my relief Catalina likes elephants too......our son told me that recently, after they had been to a Zoo. I am very happy, because I was not sure what to do with this block, it seemed so strange between all the others.

Fijn weekend!

Now all I have to do is the little man. next time I shall write a bit more about him...
Enjoy your weekend!

"Een vreemd blok.......A strange block"

The next block for Catalina's Paradise quilt (aka Bountiful Life, Civil War bride quilt) is very strange. There is a man with an elephant, and above them two horses. The name on the elephant is 'Hanible', which should have been Hannibal.
Is this a circus block? I have been reading a lot about the history of the circus in America around the time of the quilt, and there was a circus elephant with the name Hannibal. On the original quilt there is a heart embroidered on the jacket of the man. Why? There are all sorts of possibilities, and it is fun to guess the real reason....

In this small basket are the fabrics for the quilt. A lot of them are only small pieces. Sometimes I only need a small square, like the one on top. Out of that square I cut the barrel that the horses are drinking from....

Sometimes we go and get some fresh air on the beach....
Tot de volgende keer

Till next time

"Schoonheidswedstrijd........Beauty Contest"

Here they are, on their toes, so that the beautiful dresses stay in shape....

but it looks as if they pulled on their dresses over their nighties....!

Did you know that their eyes are two inches diameter? And that they can make steps of about five yards? Try to outrun them!

This one is also taking part .....a real grass head...;o)

Our neighbours are going to decide who is the most beautiful...!

Fijne dag!

Have a nice day!

"Merel-geluk.........Blackbird-happiness"

At last everything is as it should be. Mrs Blackbird has come, and the eggs are in the nest.
So we can sing...!

Mr Blackbird can already imagine himself walking in the garden in autumn with four young blackbirds. He will enjoy teaching them how they can look after themselves.
As long as there is no cat to spoil everything. Cats are the biggest enemies of the blackbirds, because they take the young birds out of the nest and 'play' with them till they are dead.

There are no cats in America Paradise"....;o)

Fortunately there are no cats in Nicholas and Catalina's garden, although sometimes they have to chase one away who comes snooping round. Catalina loves birds too much to allow a bird killer in her garden.
But everything will be fine for this blackbird couple, because they will be safely in the quilt, and they will be able to sing forever:  "There are no cats in America Paradise"....;o)
Mrs Blackbird was lucky too, because there was a nice eye fabric for her...

In the meantime I have learned a lot about blackbirds.  Mrs Blackbird prefers male blackbirds with beautiful shiny beaks......wasn't it good that I had some old thick shiny silk.....

And something else I know at last....why Mr Blackbird always makes such a noise when it gets dark. He wants to chase away any other blackbirds who think that it might be nice to roost in his territory for a change!
And now the next block is waiting - that will be fun too, because ostriches are such interesting birds!
Fijne dag!

Enjoy your day!

"Mijnheer Merel..............Mr Blackbird"

Lots of leaves.......who is going to live in this tree?

One of the inhabitants has arrived, although still feeling a bit awkward....

Mrs Blackbird is not there yet, but the nest has been built, so perhaps she is enjoying a bit of freedom before she has to sit on the nest.
On the original quilt block are two 'Red-winged Blackbirds'. They look a little bit like our blackbirds, so I have altered the drawing, and made them into European blackbirds.
That is nicer, because they live in Nicholas and Catalina's garden, so they really belong in Catalina's Paradise quilt.

I have found a wonderful fabric for his eye.....

Fijne dag!

This quilt is made from the pattern of Corliss Searcey, the 'Civil War Bride'. I ordered the pattern a few years ago from Australia (click), but you can buy the 'Bountiful Life' book by Karen Mowery, that has the patterns also, but then square, just like the original 'Bird of Paradise' quilt.
Enjoy your day!

"Pauwengeluk.........Peacock happiness"

After some changing around the peacock block is done...but what a lovely block to do!

The blue body which I had already appliqued on, was not bright enough, so I searched for a different fabric. This one looks more peacockish.

The same fabric in two colourways was nice for the flower hearts and the rings on the peacock....

Among my DMC threads I found a nice colour for the crest....

I had to search on the internet to see what the eye was like, but this one looked most like it. It looks as if I have enough eyes for all the peacocks in the country...;o)

Finally I embroidered the little blue tufts and added some blue blending filament...

Nu nog maar 6 blokken....
Fijne dag!

Only 6 more blocks...
Enjoy your day!
